In today’s blog, you will learn a little more about the work of the Spanish artist Hakuuro, you will know a little more about his musical trajectory, his personal life, and of course, more details about his latest release, Le Méridien.
His new tropical song was partially produced on a beach with his notebook, full of delicacy and subtlety brushed around this track… An attentive listener will discover new meanings and intentionality every time you press play!
Small pearls like the design of a roller coaster of emotions when contrasting at the beginning of the song a shy acoustic guitar combined with a soft piano with an aggressive kick right after the introduction, catching the listener off guard and drawing our attention to the fresh atmosphere that the saxophone goes on to draw.
Right after the first drop a second saxophone accompanies the main melody in thirds, being perfectly executed and giving more strength to the theme. All this is packaged in a rhythm with perfectly curated tones to reinforce the beach feel. (I need this hi-hat in my library right now!)
Somehow Hakuuro managed to pass the freshness and smell of the sea air through his music, and isn’t that what we’re all looking for? Capture moments, and immortalize them on our tracks?
What is your real name?
Biel
How old are you?
24
What is your main inspiration in music?
What motivates me the most when I make music is the desire to create and share. Since I was very young, I have really liked music in general, I feel that it is a wonderful way of expressing what sometimes is difficult for us to say with words. In this way, what motivates me the most is being able to transmit emotions, converting what I feel at that moment into a song that speaks for me.
Where were you born and where do you currently live?
I was born in Igualada, a small town near Barcelona. For studies, I have lived some wonderful years of my life in Vic although I have now returned to Igualada, the place where I have all my family and friends.
When and why did you start your artist Project?
Although the first song I released under the alias “Hakuuro” is from 2020, my first musical project was born in 2019, together with a good friend with whom we continue to constantly create and share music. Hakuuro was born from the need I have to continue exploring and creating. I’ve always wanted to create music, but it was always difficult for me to take the step, there are many times that people tell you “Keep studying and don’t get distracted by anything”. Even so, at university, I decided to start exploring one of the genres that I had listened to the most in high school, and that helped me focus when studying for my exams, Lo-Fi. My profile shows the constant evolution and learning that I have had with music over the years, and currently, I strive to achieve a much more natural sound that mixes genres that I also love as in the case of “Le Méridien” with jazz touches, or in other projects mixing even EDM effects with Lo-Fi rhythms.
You told me this is one of your favorite compositions. Could you tell me about the creative process of producing Le Méridien and what was your inspiration for this composition?
Totally, without a doubt, “Le Méridien” is one of my favorite songs, and I’m sure it always will be, simply because of the memory it brings me back.
I started creating “Le Méridien” on the beach, as I have mentioned I am from near Barcelona, and luckily this summer I have been able to enjoy the heat and the beach for quite a few days. Even so, even on vacation, I can’t stop making music, and that’s when I started working on “Le Méridien”, lying near the beach and making sure that water didn’t get into the laptop. Then at home, I was able to work more thoroughly on the song. It was a strange feeling because I had been in a small creative crisis for a long time, but when I started working on “Le Méridien” everything went very smoothly, so I felt that my blockage had been lifted, that’s why it’s also so important to me, since that the song unites two of the things that I like and matter the most to me, my love for music and the peace of the sea.
How did you choose your artistic name? Does it have a meaning behind it?
I don’t know if I should invent some elaborate story to look good, but the truth is that I’m pretty horrible with names. I even published a song called “untitled”. Something similar happened with the name of Hakuuro. I was in my old room at my parents’ house 3 years ago, thinking about what name to give myself, and while I was thinking I started looking around. I have a room full of movie posters, and one of the posters is for “Spirited Away”. So I started thinking about names and the movie, and I could only think of the name of Haku, the dragon in the movie and then I thought of Chihiro, the protagonist of the movie, who for me represents innocence and purity, but at the same time, the courage, and together, Chihiro and Haku represent love, and I thought that I wanted to try to represent all these emotions in my music, that was my dream, so I put these two names together and it was none other than Hakuuro, that for me represents love, courage, not being afraid to face challenges and always keeping the music as pure as possible.
How did your journey in music bring you to where you are today and how do you see yourself 5 years from now (as Hakuuro, especially)?
I think everything I’ve done with music so far has been based on the love I have for Lo-Fi and music in general. I have always liked to talk about music, learn about it, and I think that over the years I have been able to demonstrate it. With the few people I have collaborated with it has been only because I have seen talent, regardless of the numbers. When I worked with Wix for example, he didn’t even have 50 monthly listeners, but I heard his first song and contacted him without hesitation, even though I had never collaborated with anyone. Three songs came out of that collaboration, two of which entered to lofi beats editorial playlist. For me, achieving that was an impressive achievement and it motivated me a lot to continue making music, and I know perfectly well that I would not have been able to make such a wonderful EP without his talent.
I think this is what I’ve achieved so far, regardless of the numbers, I’ve always been lucky enough to interact with people who love music like me and have incredible talent that I can admire and learn from.
I’ve also thought a lot about the question of what Hakuuro will be like in 5 years. It is difficult to say something exactly, but I am sure that I will continue making music and enjoying myself as I do now, apart, I hope that I will continue learning and meeting wonderful and talented people along the way. I have a degree in psychology and a master’s degree in educational guidance, and jokingly (or not so jokingly) I say that I want to be like Batman, have two lives, during the day be a good psychologist at the institute where I am, and in the night Hakuuro, a producer always eager to create and share. My dream would be to be able to combine these two passions. I am sure of one thing, and that is that in five years Biel will continue to enjoy music as his 5-year-old self did when he started playing the accordion.
As a label, it is an honor to be a part of the release of such a special song for a kind and talented artist like Hakuuro!
